Quality Management

Inborn Errors of Metabolism

Patients with rare diseases often face many medical and organisational problems in addition to the actual burden of the mostly chronic disease. By drawing up the National Action Plan for People with Rare Diseases (NAMSE), the German government aims to support people with rare diseases and guarantee healthcare of a comparable quality to that provided for people with common “widespread diseases”. This is where the Association for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism in Adults (ASIM) comes in. ASIM has drawn up a quality management programme to help centres that care for adult patients with rare metabolic disorders to implement this with excellent medical and organisational quality. The project supports the medical facilities with the help of a matrix that will enable interested centres to achieve ISO 9001:2015 for their facility. The content of the catalogue of requirements is aligned with the objectives of the NAMSE centres. Details of the procedure can be found on the ASIM website (www.ASIM-med.de). Centres that are successfully certified by an independent certification company within two years can also expect to receive financial support. The project was made possible by donations, so that 5-8 centres can receive a certain amount of compensation.
